Purpose

This article will show how to get the Counterpath X-Lite softphone client for Windows, version 4.7 configured to work with the ESI Cloud PBX service.  Follow these steps.

Support:

This phone is officially unsupported.

What this means is that this information is provided for your convenience if you wish to install and configure it for the service.  These settings have been tested to verify the softphone works.

If you are not able to get the device to work following these instructions, our Tech Support staff is not able to assist you.  They do not have the expertise to troubleshoot issues with this softphone client.  Do not call Tech Support for assistance.  Please use the vendor's documentation instead.

Configuring in your dashboard

The first step is to create the device on your account in your user dashboard.  Login to your user dashboard.  If you have a Premier account, you will have a Phones menu.  Click on this to see your current devices on your account.  For Select users, have your Reseller help create the phone device.

Click on Add Phone and a Add a Phone box will pop up.  Create a new Device Name by taking your existing extension and appending the letter a-z to the end.  For example, if your extension is 1001, enter 1001a as shown below.  For the Model, choose Manual of Softphone.  Then click Add.

Getting the account info

Now that the device is created, edit the device by clicking on the 1001a in the Device Name column, or by clicking the pencil icon on the far right of this device entry.  A box will pop-up with the necessary information to fill out in the X-Lite configuration.

Device Configuration

Setting up the Counterpath X-Lite client

Next, download and install the Counterpath X-Lite client following the instructions on their web site.  Run the application and click on Softphone->Account Settings.

Fill in the account settings as shown below using the configuration information from your user dashboard as shown above.

  • Note that the User ID and Authorization name or both set to the Device Name.
  • The Password is the same password as from above.  This is not your dashboard password as this one is specific to this device.
  • The Domain name below is set to the Domain/Proxy information from above.
  • Make sure to place a check in the Register with domain and receive calls box in the Domain Proxy settings below.
  • Select Proxy address, and then enter the Outbound Proxy settings from above.  Do not add the :5060 as shown below.  Also, the one below is an example.  Use the exact one returned in your dashboard settings for this device.

 X-Lite SIP Account Settings

In the Voicemail tab settings:

  • Check the Check for voicemail box and then enter *97 in the Number to dial box as shown below.
  • Leave Number for sending calls blank.
  • Do not check the Send calls to voicemail as the Cloud PBX is running the timers to determine if a call should go to voicemail.  Setting something here could result in the X-Lite device improperly handling voicemail timeouts on your account.

 X-Lite Voicemail Settings

Use the following settings for Topology:

  • For Firewall traversal method, choose None.
  • There is no need to pre-define any ranges for ports for signaling or RTP, so do not check these.

 X-Lite Topology Settings

Use the following settings for Presence:

  • Choose Peer-to-peer from the drop down list.
  • Set the poll time to 300 seconds.
  • Set the Refresh Interval to 300 seconds.  Screen shot will be updated shortly.

 X-Lite Presence Settings

Use the following settings for Transport:

  • For Signaling transport, choose UDP.

Use the following settings for Advanced:

  • For Reregister every, enter 30 seconds.
  • For Minimum time, enter 10 seconds.
  • For Maximum time, enter 30 seconds.
  • Do not check Enable session timers.
  • For Hold method, choose the first option.
  • Check the Send SIP keep-alives box.
  • Check the Use rport box.

 X-Lite Advanced Settings

Once set and saved, the phone should register with your account.

Next, click on Softphone->Preferences.

Use Applications and Alerts & Sounds to choose how you want X-Lite to interact with your local computer.

In Devices, choose the audio device you want to use with your softphone.  It's extremely important to adjust any microphone settings, whether you are using a laptop mic, headset mic or stand mic.  If you do not set these properly, the user on the other end of the call will have difficulty hearing or understanding you.  Refer to Counterpath, your microphone supplier or your operating system vendor's documentation on how to adjust your microphone settings.

In Audio Codecs, choose the codecs supported by our service.  The list should include the following:

  • G.722
  • G711 uLaw
  • G711 aLaw

The other codecs will only work when calling directly between other X-Lite clients or a few other clients that support the other formats.  G711 uLaw is mandatory for use with the service.

X-Lite Code List

The X-Lite client only supports the H.263 standard for video in the list of Video Codecs.

In the Calls settings, choose the following:

  • For DTMF, enable Send via RFC 2833.
  • It's optional to check Play DTMF tones back to me.  Check this if you want to hear the tones played to you as you enter them in your client.
  • Check Enable inactivity timer and set for 30 seconds.  If no audio is heard from the other end for this period, the call will terminate.

X-Lite Calls Settings

At this point, you should have a functioning Counterpath X-Lite client.

Don't forget to enable Simultaneous Ring on your extension, and check Ring all user's phones.  Now when user's call your extension, this device will ring along with any other device on your account.
